How does Energy Level determine my energy score?

Energy Level relies on data which is (usually) determined by your Apple Watch. The data used are Heart Rate and, to a lesser degree, Heart rate variability, or HRV. Combining these data samples Energy Levels determines your BCI, Baseline Cardiac Index. We use those values to determine your current (real time) energy level.

What is BCI, or Baseline Cardiac Index?

Baseline Cardiac Index is measured in beats per minute and is a sensitive marker for your body's energy level. A Higher BCI means your body is "working harder" in its "Baseline State". That's where the name fore BCI comes from. If your body is working harder in its baseline state, it requires a higher heart rate, which is why BCI is measure in beats per minute. Think of it like this: the lower your energy level, the more beats your heart needs just to keep things going.

How come my energy level score changes?

There are a lot of factors that go into your energy level. The most important factors are: sleep, stress, diet, sickness, exercise, recovery, and, of course, general health and well being. There are many contributing factors which only you will be able to isolate. Energy Level is there to provide data to back up your feeling of wellness and energy. How you feel is the most reliable indicator of energy level. The app is there to back up your feelings.

Do I need to wear my watch at night?

While you may choose to do so, you do not need to wear your watch at night to maintain accurate readings. Your Apple Watch will determine the necessary data all through the day, including in the morning. When that data is available, your Energy Level will be determined.

If I wear my watch at night, what Energy Levels should I expect?

Ideally, as you fall asleep and your body shifts into recovery mode, you should see your Energy Level score begin to rise. This happens because your nervous system switches towards its "rest and digest" state (parasympathetic dominance), causing HRV to increase and heart rate to decrease. Your score often reaches its highest points during periods of deep sleep, which tend to occur more frequently in the first half of the night.

My Energy Level score was quite low when I first fell asleep (e.g., in the first hour or two). Is that bad?

Not necessarily! Seeing a lower score early in the night is actually quite common and can happen for several reasons:

  • Winding Down: It takes time for your body to fully transition from the stresses of the day into a deep recovery state.
  • Late Meal/Snack: Digesting food can keep your RHR slightly elevated and HRV lower initially.
  • Late Exercise: Your body might still be recovering from a recent workout.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol significantly suppresses HRV and increases RHR early in the night.
  • Stress: Lingering mental or physical stress can delay the shift into deep rest.
  • Feeling Unwell: Your body might be working harder if it's fighting something off.
  • Warm Room: Being too warm can sometimes prevent your RHR from dropping quickly.
  • Natural Sleep Cycles: You might simply not have hit your deepest sleep stages yet.

What if my Energy Level score starts low but increases as the night goes on?

This is generally a very positive sign! An increasing Energy Level score during the night strongly suggests that your body did successfully shift into a more restorative state. It shows you were likely getting into deeper sleep phases and that recovery was happening, even if it took a little while to get started.

Should my Energy Level score stay high all night long?

Not always. Sleep isn't one constant state. During REM sleep (when you typically dream), your brain activity increases, and your heart rate and breathing become more variable. This can sometimes lead to temporary dips in your HRV and slight increases in RHR, causing your Energy Level score to decrease compared to deep sleep phases. This fluctuation is normal, especially in the later parts of the night when REM stages become longer.

So, what's the most important thing to look at?

Instead of focusing on a single reading at one point in time (especially early on), pay attention to the overall trend of your Energy Level score throughout the night.

  • An upward trend during the night is generally a good indicator of recovery.
  • Compare your nightly pattern to your own average or baseline over several nights to understand what's normal for you.

How can I potentially improve my nighttime Energy Level scores?

Improving your overall sleep quality often helps:

  • Stick to a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Ensure your bedroom is cool, dark, and quiet.
  • Avoid large meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime.
  • Manage stress through relaxation techniques before bed.
  • Get regular exercise, but avoid intense workouts right before sleeping.

By understanding these patterns, you can get a better sense of how well your body is resting and recovering each night.

My watch is showing different data, what can I do?

Inside the app settings (top left corner) you'll see a "Watch Connection" Area. Make sure all those are checked and tap "check" next to health check. You may also tap "Reset Watch sync". If you continue having errors or discrepancies, please contact us via support.

How do I cancel my Pro subscription?

Subscription management is done through your Apple ID, which can be found in your iPhone "Settings" App. Tap your Apple ID and then tap "Subscriptions". You will be able to see and manage any active subscriptions there. You can also search for "Subscriptions" in the Settings App.

Advanced Support

If you can't get something to work properly, whatever it may be, then this is the section for you.

Try each of these steps and then check if your problem is resolved after each step. Do not proceed to the next step unless the previous step DID NOT SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM. Some of the steps may cause you to lose data. If that's the case, that will be listed as a possible side effect.

1. Restart devices

These steps should not cause data loss.

Restart your Apple Watch by following these directions provided by Apple

Restart your iPhone by following these directions provided by Apple

2. Reset the sync between your Apple Watch and iPhone

  1. Open the "Watch" app on your iPhone.
  2. Next, from the "My Watch" tab, select the "General" option.
  3. From here, swipe down to the bottom of the page and tap on the "Reset" option.
  4. In the new menu, tap on the "Reset Sync Data" button.

3. Unpair and reset the Apple Watch

Although this should not result in data loss, you will have to set up your watch again.

Follow these instructions from apple to unpair and reset your Apple Watch

Once you have reset the watch, you can set it up again

4. Un-install and re-install Energy Level

This should not result in data loss.

  1. Tap and hold the Energy Level app.
  2. When the icons begin vibrating, you will see an X over Energy Level (and other apps).
  3. Tap the X button and confirm delete.
  4. Find Energy Level on the app store and re-install the app from the App Store
  5. Install and open the app.
